Fractional Parts of Niunbers.

1. If I give out 28 sheets of paper to 4 boys, how many sheets will each boy receive?

Here we have to divide 28 into 4 equal parts. We write:

28-^4, or 4)28, or 4)28

If we divided the paper into two parts, what would each part be called? When we divide it into 4 parts, each part is called one fourth or one quarter and it is written i.

2. Into how many parts should we have to divide the paper in order to have i, i, i, ^, i, i^?

These expressions which tell into how many equal parts something has been divided are called fractions.

3. Divide 36 by 4. What is i of 36? Divide 32 by 8. What is i of 32?

4. Divide 42 by 6. What is i of 42? Divide 50 by 5. What is -^ of 50?

When we say i of 32, we wish to find only 1 of the 4 equal parts of 32. When we say f, we wish to find three of the 4 equal parts of 32. -^ of 40 means 7 of the 10 equal parts of 40; that is, 28.
